The glass born of fire
Obsidian is a natural glass, born of lava that cooled so quickly it had no time to crystallise. From this sudden birth, between the fire of the earth and the air that seized it, it has kept a deep black and an almost liquid sheen that have fascinated many civilisations. The Aztecs polished it into mirrors, and one of them, brought from Mexico, ended up in the hands of John Dee, the scholar and astrologer who advised Elizabeth I; it is kept today at the British Museum.
