Few stones have been as closely bound to a civilisation as jade has been to China, where Confucius, according to the Book of Rites, compared its qualities to those of the virtuous man. Jadeite, the more precious of the two varieties of jade, comes mainly from Myanmar, from where it once travelled to the imperial workshops. Lithotherapy has made it a stone of balance and harmony, associated with the heart chakra and said to encourage serenity and a sense of right measure in all things.
