Smoky quartz owes its brown, sometimes almost black colour to the slow action of the rocks' natural radioactivity on the crystal over geological ages. In Scotland it is called cairngorm, after the mountains where it was found, and it often adorned traditional jewellery. Lithotherapy associates it with the root chakra and makes it a grounding stone, reputed to absorb negative energies and help restore calm and stability.
