Obsidian is a natural glass, born of lava that cooled so quickly it had no time to crystallise. Ancient peoples made blades of extreme sharpness from it, and the Aztecs polished it into mirrors, one of which ended up in the hands of John Dee, the scholar at the court of Elizabeth I. The lithotherapy tradition has made it a stone of protection, associated with the root chakra, reputed to absorb negative energies and encourage grounding.
